An Opportunity to Participate
Garden By The Sea is a young start-up with big dreams. A large plot of land was recently donated by Galilean Lutheran Church behind their retreat center to be used as a community garden. A garden is a perfect fit for this town’s love of nature and will serve the purpose of not only growing fresh produce, but also helping us to grow in building relationships.
Our team of volunteers is made up civic leaders, retired executives, and master gardeners with the time and ambition to see that this project is successful. Due to the immense interest in the garden, in barely two months we have already secured financial commitments from many local businesses and citizens. It isn’t enough, however, to complete the building of the fence and raised beds so we need to continue our efforts to raise funds.
The excitement in the community for this garden stems from many different sources. The Ocean Shores Food Bank currently has very little fresh produce for its recipients, so the garden has a large plot dedicated to the food bank with plans for its recipients to care for it on a daily basis. Also, local restaurants have expressed an interest in purchasing mushrooms and herbs from the garden. Finally, the residents of Ocean Shores are faced with a challenging environment in which to have gardens in their own yards. Not only do we have soil made up almost entirely of sand, we also have strong winds that blow through on a regular basis…and there are hundreds of deer that love to eat delicate flowers and tasty vegetables. The community garden would provide a 8 foot fence to keep out the deer and help diffuse the winds, and the master gardeners would be on hand to help teach us about composting and other ways to amend our weak soil.
So far there are no other community gardens in the greater North Beach so there is a huge opportunity to draw in people from neighboring communities to get involved. We plan to build a gazebo in the garden to provide educational talks to the locals and our many tourists on topics such as nutrition, coastal gardening, soil erosion, and organic pesticides and fertilizers. We would also like to start a garden library for the townspeople to use to help with their gardening efforts.
There is no question that our town will be enhanced by such an amazing project: rich and poor alike will be eating healthier foods, our children educational programs and adult growers workshops will help to educate us about the special needs of coastal gardening, our town will have yet another reason for tourists to visit us which will help our town’s economy, and in the process we will be growing our friendships and community spirit locally, nationally and international.
Please consider participating in this worthy project by becoming one of our contributors.

2010 Seeking Grants
Continued Funding Becomes an Imperitive To Sustain Our Garden (Grant Requests)

Mr. Jim Daly
Grays Harbor Community Foundation
707 J Street
Hoquiam, WA 98550
Dear Mr. Daly,
The Garden by the Sea, a community garden is respectfully requesting a grant in the amount of $4,200 for our building structures and improvements of the garden. As the first and only community garden in the entire North Beach area, serving over 200 Food Bank families with fresh vegetables, individual growing plots serving over 30 families from every social/economic background and programs that support education and health for all of our citizens. Working closely with the Food Bank we are conscious of the changing needs in our service area, and are committed to growing and adapting our garden to meet emerging needs. The Building Structures and Improvements Project will allow us to effectively (1) provide additional means of communication and outreach messaging to visitors who lack access to the internet or news paper (2) to safe guard and protect our garden tools and equipment from the harsh weather conditions found in Ocean Shores (3) to promote safety and sustainability of the garden property by retarding invasive weeds and developing sure footedness on our pathways.
Our boards of directors have taken great strides to secure sustainability in this organization. Its foundational planning, from governance, to volunteerism is leading edge. They are enthusiastic about this program and strive to be the most inclusive and community relationship oriented center in all the North Beach.
Through this project, the garden will serve as a unique opportunity for community members from every background, every walk of life to socialize around the notion that growing relationships can be as fun and easy as growing food. Clients of our local food bank will benefit from the freshest of ingredients, organically grown and delivered within blocks of the garden (something that’s never happened before) and volunteers to learn, expand and develop real world skills from communications, planning and governance to weeding, composting and harvesting. Today even our local Neighborhood Good Neighbor Center (formally the Sr. Center) has a plot! Thank you for your consideration of our request.
